Weapons are used by characters on Ivalice to increase the damage they can inflict to the enemy, and are divided in several weapon types. No class has really any benefit in going empty handed, so having a good weapon is recommended for everyone, but this especially is true for classes, like the Sword Knight or the Engineer, whose skills do weapon based damage. Weapons used to be divided into long range and short range, but when stances got introduced instead of the front/back rank system, there is no difference anymore. To use a weapon, you have to possess the appropriate weapon skill for the weapon type(usually, that is determined by your class).

Weapon types are: Axe, Claw, Dagger, Hammer, Fist, Katana, Rod, Sword, Card, Gun, Music, Spear, and Whip

The weapons skills have the same names. The Music skill also is the ability a bard has to sing his songs.

In addition to various levels of strength, weapons also vary in speed. Some weapons, such as a knife, are designed with quick movements in mind, allowing the wielder to strike more often. Others, like the axe, are designed for raw power, sacrificing speed in the process. It's important to keep weapon speed in mind when deciding what to take into battle with you. Below is a quick list of the speeds for reference. The lower the number, the faster the weapon.
