It is said that, through synthesis, a person is able to create an unstable portal into another dimension where a race of reclusive creatures known as the Baknamy dwell. Within this twisted land are potent forces of magic otherwise unknowable to those upon Ivalice. Therefore, only the Baknamy merchants carrying the knowledge necessary for mages to learn some of the more esoteric spells that even Aliur has not heard of.
